Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels use cells containing a semi-conductor material to capture the sun's energy and convert solar radiation into electricity. When light shines on the semi-conductor the electric field across the junction between these two layers causes electricity to flow, generating direct current (DC).
To support the development of renewable energy, the Hong Kong Government has provided some incentives to those who install Solar PV to generate renewable energy.
Under the scheme, people who install Solar PV at their premises can sell the renewable energy they generate back to the power companies. This can be for as high as five times more than the normal electricity tariff rate.
